William Daley begins his sculptures with detail drawings, devising plans and elevations as an architect might. From these designs, he constructs the piece in earthenware and then fires it. Preferring the look of the raw clay, he usually does not add glazes or colors.
At first glance, the appearance of Chiclet Squared seems fairly straightforward, an expression in earthenware of the basic chiclet form, a square with rounded edges. However, when viewed from every angle, the viewer will notice the elaborate maze and irregular shapes that cover the inside. Additionally, the interior forms echo the complicated shapes of the pot's exterior.
