Plant Stands with Mosaic Tops and Bronze Vessels

Michael Hurwitz intended these circular plant stands to be pleasing from any angle.  He hinted at their horticultural function by adapting leaf shapes for the wood frets and delineating plant motifs on the marble tops.  His quietly elegant forms bespeak an Eastern sensibility, a predisposition on his part that intensified after several visits to Japan for work and study.

Meticulous craftmanship and natural materials are hallmarks of Hurwitz's style.  Created by Hurwitz, especially for the Pennsylvania Convention Center, these twin units were fabricated by several artisans.  Hurwitz's wife, the sculptor Mami Kato, executed the labor-intensive inlaid mosaics and Todd Noe crafted the graceful bronze vessels that are sometimes used for floral arrangements.
