The Pennsylvania Convention Center acquired two photographs from Lependorf’s “Shirokuro” series.  Pictured here is Shirokuro XXVIII. In Japanese, “Shiro” and “Kuro” mean “black” and “white.”  Here, the stark contrast of light and shadow allows these natural images to enter a realm of pure form and line, suggesting stillness and movement at the same time.  Lependorf had been studying Japanese sumi-e (black ink) painting when she created these images, and sought here to achieve the same depth of expression through minimal elements.
