Teres Vase Series: Green, Gray, and Pink
Jill Bonovitz's vases cluster together like three ladies, with lacy necks and small, delicate feet. Their forms and washed pastel colors suggest ballet skirts or even lingerie. But look again. They also call to mind the quirky, crenelated rooflines of Philadelphia, which the artist saw from her studio window.
A master of unstudied gesture, Bonovitz enjoys sharing with us the evidence of her creative process, such as the lightly undulating hand-formed slabs and the casually finger-pinched handles. In counterpoint to the breezy construction, her creamy surfaces, with their light scratch marks and liquid lines, offer expansive, contemplative areas to explore.
