Still Life with Fish
Still Life with Fish is grisaille oil painting, part of a series still ongoing as of 2016, which uses still life as a vehicle to speak about personal history and the artist’s “Place” as it influences the artist. Patierno considers this painting, and his work, to be a product of the America he has known and lives with. This painting is American Art.
In contrast, the painting harkens to the European history of ideas flowing from the Renaissance to the present. The landscapes in the distance mimic Pennsylvania towns in south central Pennsylvania. The grisaille painting Still Life with Fish is a unique discussion of the ordinary. The lack of color drains the emotion relying on an amber glaze for the impression of age and emotionless color.
