River Rhythms

Workman’s painting of the Susquehanna River is representative of his reverence for the grandeur of the natural world and its steady cadences.  It also speaks to his concerns over the effects human activities have had upon the waterway’s health.  Workman is particularly drawn to the many islands in the river and their metaphorical symbolism.

Workman’s mastered technique of layering transparent washes of paint on wet paper allows him to achieve the soft gradations and subtle transitions in both the sky and the river.  This technique allows Workman to depict the light and atmosphere for which he is known.
