This small, radiant container commands our attention like a baroque treasure-box or a Fabergé egg.  It brims with surface detail, color, and the reflective sheen of its curved mirrors.  Yet this visual richness is the product of cheap and accessible materials that we might not expect to see used for art.  With its faux-royal gaudiness, Lizard Box seems to toy playfully with its setting in the Convention Center, which some see as a modern-day, public palace.

By placing mirrors on both the inside and the outside, artist Vaughn Stubbs breaks down our usual sense of interior and exterior space, much as the large windows on the opposite wall bring the outside in.  Not only does Lizard Box mirror its grand surroundings, but it also makes us an integral part of its ornamentation.
