Philadelphia is a city of neighborhoods, each with a distinctive architectural presence. For this series of views of her native city, painter Edith Neff visited three different areas. She took snapshots to use as the basis for detailed charcoal drawings. Finally, she employed pastel crayons to cover the drawings with soft, gestural marks of color.
In House of Kensington, a typical Philadelphia brownstone and red-brick rowhouse stands strangely alone, awash in late afternoon light and shadows.
